Dr. Susan Vierling is a board-certified ophthalmologist and vitreoretinal surgeon with over 30 years of experience treating complex retinal conditions. She earned her medical degree from the University of Illinois College of Medicine at Chicago and completed her internship at MacNeal Hospital in Berwyn, Illinois. She went on to complete her ophthalmology residency at the University of Missouri-Columbia and a vitreoretinal surgery fellowship at Louisiana State University School of Medicine in New Orleans.
Dr. Vierling’s clinical expertise includes the diagnosis and treatment of retinal detachment, age-related macular degeneration, endophthalmitis, late-onset retinal degeneration, cataracts, and glaucoma. She previously served as a Clinical Assistant Professor at Loyola University Stritch School of Medicine and an attending physician at Edward Hines, Jr. VA Hospital, where she taught medical and surgical retina to ophthalmology residents. She is affiliated with multiple hospitals and surgery centers across the region, including Elmhurst Memorial Hospital, Rush Oak Park Hospital, Advocate Sherman Hospital and the Midwest Center for Day Surgery.
Dr. Vierling is an active member of several professional organizations, including the American Academy of Ophthalmology, American Society of Retina Specialists, Chicago Ophthalmologic Society, Illinois Academy of Ophthalmology, and the American Medical Association. She resides in Elmhurst with her husband, Dr. Tim Vierling, and their two sons. In her free time, she enjoys swimming and playing the piano.
