Dr. Rumya Rao is a board-certified ophthalmologist and retina specialist with nearly two decades of experience in diagnosing and treating complex retinal conditions. She earned her medical degree from the University of Texas Health Science Center at San Antonio and completed her internship at Virginia Mason Medical Center. Dr. Rao went on to complete her ophthalmology residency at McGaw Medical Center of Northwestern University and a prestigious retina fellowship at the University of Miami’s Bascom Palmer Eye Institute.
Dr. Rao practices at the Retina Institute of Illinois, with office locations in Niles, Crystal Lake, Gurnee and Chicago. Her clinical interests include the treatment of macular degeneration, diabetic retinopathy, vascular occlusions, retinal tears and a wide range of retinal diseases. In addition to English, Dr. Rao speaks conversational Spanish, allowing her to connect with a broader patient population. Outside of work, she enjoys traveling and exploring Chicago with her family.
